Helping authors to find their voice and to polish their words

I take projects from good to great, from obscure to priceless.

Content or substantive editing is a subjective depth that evaluates the “big picture” organization and effectiveness of the message (content analysis). It often involves recommendations to the author for rewriting content.

  • Check for:
    • Readability and flow
    • Structural difficulties
    • Stylistic troubles
    • Sentence structure and rhythm
    • Cloudy explanations
    • Vague assumptions
    • Faulty logic

Sarah references the following resources as the industry standard for manuscripts: The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style, 4th Edition; Chicago Manual of Style, 18th Edition; and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition. However, when editing website content, Sarah references the following as the industry standard: The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law 2015; The Yahoo Style Guide, 1st Edition; and Webster’s New World College Dictionary, 11th Edition.

To receive a final estimate, a client should email the first few chapters of his or her manuscript to Sarah for review. If Sarah believes that her skills are a good fit for the project, she will do a complimentary edit of a few pages with the two-fold purpose of 1) observing Sarah’s editorial style and 2) helping her to provide an individualized estimate based on the scope of the particular project. If the final estimate is accepted, the project will be scheduled for completion well within the client’s deadline.

Clients should submit payment in response to the FreshBooks invoice they will receive via email. An online payment service fee of 3 percent will be added to the invoice for paying online with a debit or credit card. However, a client may deduct the 3 percent online fee by submitting a check payable to “Hayhurst Editorial, LLC” to the address on the emailed invoice.

For small projects, either method of payment is to be paid in full within 15 days after delivery of the completed project/date of the invoice. For larger projects and manuscripts, a $250 nonrefundable deposit will be required before the work is scheduled on Sarah’s editorial calendar. This deposit will go toward paying 50 percent of the estimate when the work commences with the remainder of the balance to be collected upon delivery of the completed project.

  • The desired format for manuscript submission includes the following: Word document, Times Roman font, one-inch margins, and double-spaced with page numbers in the footer. Sarah will use the Track Changes feature under the Review tab in Microsoft Word. With this feature clients may choose to accept all of the changes at once or to work through one edit or comment at a time, controlling what changes they implement.
  • The easiest method for the editing of websites is for clients to temporarily provide login information. Sarah has edited pages directly in several platforms, such as Word Press, saving the clients the time of implementing the edits and delivering polished pages that do not require additional tweaks. And Sarah would love to edit a company’s dynamic web content on a regular basis before it is uploaded to the website.

Sarah was an absolute pleasure to work with on my book project. She provided both editorial as well as proofing services. She carefully worked through my manuscript and helped me to produce a cleaner narrative that flowed well and removed any distractions for the reader. I give Sarah my highest recommendation. She went above and beyond in her work, and her partnership is most appreciated. She is an expert in her field whose suggestions only made my book better in its readability and quality.

I found Sarah through an extensive search on the web for an editor who had the experience that I needed. When I inquired about her services, she was not only prompt to respond, but she was also engaging and pleasant. After talking to her about my project, I had no reservations that she would get the job done. Sarah provided editing and proofreading services that exceeded my expectations. She answered all of my questions and worked with me like a mini-writing coach. I am so thankful for the work Sarah performed on my manuscript. I know that it is in much better shape than it was.
